What is Dry Needling?

  • Intramuscular or Trigger Point Dry Needling (IMT/TDN) is a technique performed by trained physical therapists involving the insertion of a thin, monofilament needle into a muscle to release shortened muscle bands (i.e. tension) and trigger points.
  • The treatment is meant to cause a ‘micro-trauma’ or localized heightened circulatory response to promote the healing process.
  • During IMT/TDN no medicine is injected during the treatment (hence, the reason it is called “dry”)
  • IMT/TDN is not traditional Chinese Acupuncture, but an effective Western Medicine treatment.  Unlike dry needling, Acupuncture aims to release endorphins, affect the nervous system, and restore the proper flow of energy throughout the body. Acupuncture involves inserting needles along the meridian lines within the body, which represent different organs and bodily systems.
